Beth Owl's Daughter - Practical Wisdom for Extraordinary Living

In my most recent article, I explained how a person's "tarot profile" has multiple layers, and is not based on only one card. The profile can offer insight into your soul's purpose and the personality traits you are refining in this lifetime. Let's continue along the path we are calling The Fool's Journey, which is a rich metaphor for the journey of life's lessons, triumphs and challenges.

Tarot cardsWe have now reached the double-digit cards, which by nature will automatically have a second card associated with them. For instance, if your date of birth reduces to 10, it will also reduce to 1. While the single digits seem to parallel the stages of human growth and what we understand about psychological development, the next cards in the journey reflect how we are influenced by the turns and twists of fate that impact us.

No card reflects this more clearly than Card X (Roman Numeral ten), which is the Wheel of Fortune. If your date of birth reduces to 10, you are a Wheel of Fortune profile. And of course, 10 further reduces to 1, so the Wheel of Fortune person is also under the influence of Roman numeral I -- the Magician.

We've already discussed the Magician, but what is the Wheel of Fortune about? As you might guess, the person who has the Wheel of Fortune in his or her profile is a risk-taker. If you are a Wheel person, you learn through the process of change itself. You are always deeply aware of the swirling influences that affect the projects and concerns in your life, and you have the flexibility to move in harmony with those energies. You are a person who knows deep in your bones the law of "What goes around, comes around," and you trust this instinctively. Because of this sense of flow and timing, you always seem to know exactly when to seize an opportunity, which to others looks like extraordinary luck -- or even the work of the Magician!

TransformationIt has only been since Dec. 31, 1965 that people have been born into the 10/1 profile, without also being in the 19/10/1 category, which we will discuss next time. So there are few people yet who have reached fame and fortune. However, singer Sarah McLachlan is one. But 10/1 profile people are going to be known for their ability to turn on a dime, changing course in their lives, turning bad luck to fortune. This will be a group of people to watch!

The next card along the Fool's Journey is XI - Justice. [Please note that in some Tarot decks, the Strength card and the Justice card may be reversed. That is, some decks have Strength as card XI, and Justice is card VIII. For the purpose of these articles, I am using the Rider-Waite system]. In this profile, the person's date of birth reduces first to eleven, then 2. This would be a combination of the II, the High Priestess, and XI - Justice. The 11/2 profile person is someone who is particularly aware of social systems, and how our culture may or may not treat the individual fairly. The 11/2 person intuitively knows how they affect others, and is careful about the laws of karma, both in their own actions and when evaluating the behavior of the people around them. The 11/2 profile makes decisions based on the question, "What is fair?"

Some of the famous 11/2's include Davy Crockett, Lord Byron, A. A. Milne, and Dr. Benjamin Spock.

Card XII, The Hanged Man, is a card that is often misunderstood. To the casual observer, the picture on the card of the person dangling upside down may be disturbing, portraying an unpleasant, even life-threatening situation. But the Hanged Man is not about torture or torment. It is about how one can turn life's challenges into the opportunity for creativity, devotion and service.

If your date of birth reduces to 12, it then reduces to 3, so you are a combination of the Hanged Man and the luscious creative energy of the Empress (III) that we discussed last year. This combination has a life purpose about learning unconditional love, and giving birth to the soul.

Are you a 12/3 that people accuse of being a workaholic? What those critics don't realize is that your work, art, or social cause is something that is so important to you, it completely absorbs you. In most cases, you don't have an unhealthy addiction to work. It is simply that you become so immersed in what you are doing, you lose track of the time. You are energized and passionate about the path that you have chosen, sometimes to the exclusion of a more "normal" life.

Famous 12/3 people include Charles Dickens, Colette, Salvador Dali and Alfred Hitchcock.

Next comes one of the most controversial cards in Tarot. The XIII card is Death. How many movies have you seen where the fortune teller pulls the Death card and disaster strikes? In truth, the Death card almost never means physical death for anyone. It does, however, have to do with understanding the profound cycles of the life force--how hope dwells in loss, for loss is necessary for rebirth.

If your date of birth reduces first to 13, then 4, your profile is one that combines the strength and authority of IV - The Emperor, with an "all or nothing" attitude that comes from your deep awareness of the impermanence of things. Your mission is one of transformation, and you are a natural leader. You are the first to toss old rules and habits that no longer serve the higher good, and you bring passion and depth to everything you do.

Many people with the 13/4 profile make their mark from turning their world upside down. They are often responsible for revolutionary work that shakes the foundations of their society. Some of them include Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Percy Shelley, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Haile Selassie, and J. Robert Oppenheimer.

This segment of the Tarot journey has focused on the turns and twists we face in our lives. These turns are needed in order to shake up the old, bring in the new, and spur our growth. Next time, we will look at even more profound challenges and the openings they make for our healing.
