Release The Resistance

While I was working as a massage therapist and energy healer in South Florida, I had the opportunity to work with a wonderful young lady who taught me the power of self-healing through awareness. Judy came to my office for a one-hour Swedish massage, which was normally a type of massage my clients enjoyed for relaxation and stress relief. For her, it turned out to be a life-changing moment of letting-go of old wounds and moving into wholeness. For me, it was a gift to have been there holding the energy for her while a profound healing simply took care of itself.

Before the massage, she didn’t mention much about herself or her life. She was a pleasant girl, about 28 years old, and was studying massage herself at the time. She did seem to display some stiffness in her left arm, and when I asked her about it, she said that she had a long-term “issue” with her arm, an old injury that kept her from raising her arm above her head without feeling pain. She held the appendage somehwhat stiffly, and it was a challenge for her to develop her massage abilities because of the restriction. Other than that, she was in very good health.

I proceeded with the Swedish massage, and when I was working on her arm, I lingered there to intend healing and love, and to listen to any messages her body might communicate to me. I was young in the development of my intuitive abilities, and although I intened love and healing, I did not receive any clear messages, so I just held the arm gently for a few moments.

After a few minutes, Judy stood up and raised her left arm. I did not feel surprised or shocked, it all happened so gently and easily. I stood back watching Judy. She was moving her arm high and then low, as if she was getting used to using it for the first time. With a relaxed smile, Judy shared with me something she had forgotten for over a decade. She told me she had not been able to raise her arm over her head in ten years, and was delighted that she was now able to do so, after just minutes of intentional healing. She shared that the healing happened when she remembered something from her past.

She was eighteen years old and leaving home for the first time. Her suitcase was packed as she prepared to leave her parents home; the home she grew up in, and lived in all of her life. She did not share with me the reason why she was leaving, but I had the impression there had been some level of tension in her home.

As she left the house, carrying a very heavy bag on her left shoulder, she turned to say goodbye to her parents. Because of the tension in the family, and due to the fact that neither parent was paying much attention to her, her mother and father did not say goodbye to Judy. She remembers leaving the house, carrying her heavy bag, and with it, a world of confusion on her shoulders. She had carried that confusion until the day she arrived at my office for a massage.

The moment Judy recalled the reason for the pain in her arm, it left her and never returned. She was able to finally release it and move on.
I have often heard that our cellular memory carries the emotional wounds we experience throughout our lives, and that to heal those wounds requires releasing the resistance energy that we are holding. It was amazing to me that the pain Judy felt in that moment in her parents house, coupled with the heavy weight of her suitcase (a metaphor for departing) could be carried for so many years, and then simply released in that magical moment of awareness and understanding.
