Xenia, pronounced SUN-KNEE-UH, which is
Greek for "hospitality", is a self taught artist,
born and raised in San Francisco, CA. She paints about life
and the inner spirit, expressed through abstracted ‘scapes'
of various physical, environmental, and non physical (imagined)
forms. In 5 years as an artist, Xenia has already garnered
both national exposure and fine art gallery representation.
"Painting has become a healing practice
for me. The artmaking process plus my attempts at expressing
abstract concepts, challenge me to confront myself, to provoke
self awareness, and to positively feed my soul. Further,
the focused attention involved keeps me grounded in the
present. Here, I can experience moments of non judgment,
compassion, and the reassuring sense that I'm connected
with all things.
"Conceptually, while my artwork has a
spiritual bent, visually I'm motivated to express this mostly
in non representational ways. Rarely absolute about composition
when starting, I do begin each piece with a sense of color
palette and an idea about what I want to convey. Then, I
get lost in creation mode, where I'll paint intuitively.
Throughout the technical steps, I continue to focus on gut
inklings and visualization to guide me forward. When things
feel like they don't work, I change direction, reflect,
or stop for a break, then later revisit with a fresh mindset.
While I play around with ethereal and atmospheric stylings,
I also like to shake things up by using elements of surprise,
such as contrary imagery, unexpected color splashes, or
scratchy textures for visual impact."
