The Year of the Fire Dog

Happy Chinese New Year! January the 29th begins the year of the Fire Dog. This will be a year of passionate expression, independent thinking and spirituality.

Although different from the Western form, Chinese astrology is an ancient system that offers a unique view of the world. The first zodiac was introduced in China in 2637 B.C. The system has developed over hundreds of years with influence from various Eastern spiritual traditions. Chinese astrology draws from such sources as Buddhism and the I-Ching, as well as the teachings of both Lao Tzu and Confucius.

The story of the animals of the zodiac comes from a legend from the times of the Buddha. The Buddha was having a celebration and preparing to leave the earth. He invited all of the animals of the kingdom to come and bid him farewell. However, only twelve animals came. To reward each animal that came, Buddha named a year for the creature. The year of each animal would bear the nature and characteristics of that animal. The first arrival was the Rat followed by the Ox, then came the Tiger and the Hare. The Dragon came next followed by the Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and finally the Boar. The Chinese people say that "the animal of your year of birth is the animal that hides in your heart."

Chinese astrology also uses five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each of the animal signs of the zodiac enters a new element every twelve years so it takes each animal a total cycle of 60 years to journey through all the elements. Hence, we may have an Earth Dragon year, a Metal Hare year or as we have in 2006, a Fire Dog year.

In the west of course, the Dog is know as man''s best friend. Those born in the year of the Dog are indeed very loyal people who adhere closely to a code of beliefs. Dog is extremely sensitive to injustice and by nature will "root for the underdog." As a result of this influence, we will see some changes on a larger scale this year. On the national level, there will be a shift in the way the nation views its leaders. Those in charge will be under the scrutiny of watchful eyes. The public will begin to demand a greater degree of accountability from those elected to office. Social and spiritual issues move back to the forefront. The previous year, that of the Rooster, gave much more control and influence to government agencies. Being rebellious, the Dog's energy will cause many people to begin to react strongly to restrictions placed on them in 2005.

Dogs are good listeners, and they make valuable friends and business partners. Unfinished business from the previous year should be concluded by the spring of 2006 for the best outcomes. Although not a sign of great wealth, the Dog is good in business and always has enough to be comfortable financially. This is not a year to take great risks with finances, instead, focus on creating greater stability. Dog energy is conducive to building a strong foundation for the future. Set your goals and seek the guidance and advice of those you respect and admire, especially those who have accomplished the things that you wish to achieve yourself.

The fire Dog is rebellious by nature and 2006 can bring periods of inner conflict. This is usually a result of a strong desire to "be on path" and to follow the call of Spirit while balancing life in the physical, material world. This is an excellent year to focus your spirit and overcome obstacles. Fire Dog energy can provide the strength and willpower needed to overcome even the most challenging of blocks in your path. Focus on your personal strong points and utilize your abilities to accomplish your goals. The Dog doesn't abandon projects and is more than willing to do the hard work needed to succeed.

Last year's Rooster energy was restrictive and confining. The Dog will break the barriers and bring many different aspects into play. Be careful to maintain your focus throughout 2006. Basic meditation or daily prayer will help keep your life stable and centered. Use the strength and determination of this year's energy to push forward and take your life in the direction you desire. Utilize the active energy available now and channel it into the creative arena.

The Dog enjoys comfort and likes to have a clean environment. With this influence in 2006 we can expect to see an increase in environmental concerns both on a local and national level. Personally, you may feel more inclined to reorganize, clean out the closets and rearrange your living space to promote more harmony in your home.

On the negative side, the Dog's energy can be overwhelming and controlling. Beware of gossip and those who are a bit too nosy about your private affairs during this year. Dogs like to take control of situations whether it involves them or not.

The Fire Dog is sensitive and can be moody and temperamental. We can expect to see this manifest in the shifting moods of the populace. Dog years often bring "fads" that catch on suddenly and just as quickly fade away. Maintain a conscious focus on the direction that you send your energy. Dog can bring stubborn attitudes and narrow minded thinking if not kept in check.

Erratic weather patterns will also be a part of 2006, especially in the late summer and fall. Likewise, late 2006 is not a good time for foreign travel. Dog energy has a definite domestic focus and likes to stay close to home. It also brings an air of caution that can sometimes be carried to the extreme. Those with trust issues will have to confront their demons this year if they want to have a productive experience.

The Dog brings with it a just and fair nature. It is a sign of leadership and decisive action. Openhearted and compassionate, the Fire Dog brings a desire for honesty, adventure and playfulness to the year. Your circle of close friends will grow closer under this influence and those in committed relationship can expect a deepening of their connections.

Dog energy inspires confidence, courage and strength of spirit. There is a Chinese proverb that says if a strange dog follows you home, your house will be blessed with prosperity. This proverb is symbolic of the spirit of 2006, the year of the Fire Dog. By allowing this energy into your life, the boundaries will fall away and you will have the opportunity to achieve happiness and success in the new year!
